Sandra C. Buttigieg is Associate Professor and Head of Department of Health Services Management, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta. She is also Consultant in Public Health Medicine at Mater Dei Hospital, Malta, where she is in charge of the Clinical Performance Unit, as well as serves as a member of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Team. Professor Buttigieg is a member of the Management Committee of the EU COST Action on ‘One Health', representing Malta. She lectures in Health Services Management, Public Health, Family Medicine and Management. She graduated M.D. (University of Malta in 1987), M.Sc. in Public Health Medicine (1997) and M.B.A. (Executive) with distinction (2002). In 2007, she obtained her Ph.D. in Management from Aston University, UK and in 2009, was elected Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK. Since 2008, Professor Buttigieg was appointed Honorary Research Fellow at Aston University, UK and recently in 2013, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, UK. She is Visiting Scholar at James Madison University, Virginia, USA and at Kuwait University, Kuwait. She is also a Fellow of two programmes of the Salzburg Global Seminar, related to health care, which were led by amongst others, past presidents of the Institute of Medicine, namely, Donald Berwick and Harvey V. Fineberg. Her research is mainly in Health Management in the areas of performance management, organisational behaviour, operations management and research, and public health. She has authored and co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed management and health journals and is currently Associate Editor for Health Economics Frontiers in Public Health, Guest Associate Editor for Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and Frontiers Topic Editor: Network for Evaluation of One Health (NEOH) – Case Studies She is also on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Human Resources Management, Journal of Health Organization and Management and Geriatrics and Gerontology-Research. She is a member of the research committee of the Health Care Management Division, American Academy of Management. She is also a reviewer of numerous peer-reviewed journals in health care and management.
